Recap: FEx & Sound Culture with DJ Brazilia
The FEx collaboration with Sound Culture Chicago last week was great. We hosted Los Angeles-based DJ Brazilia for the evening and pulled out a lot of stops to make this come together right. It was a short notice kind of thing but we pieced together some quality speakers, projected visuals, and nice vibes in a restaurant atmosphere- thanks Taxim!
DJ Sound Culture, though under the weather, started us off with a really fine set of classic & polyrhythmic Latin vibes to get the dance floor in motion, setting the space just right for DJ Newlife's global selections. By the time Brazilia came on the sonic vibrations were running high and she unloaded a wide range of samba classics & hip hop to funky stuff, and then a closing set of of perfectly mixed breakbeats, much to the happiness of the bboys.
We also welcomed Limba Gal fashions as part of the night, who I think will be joining again for certain, and amazing percussion stylings by FEx newcomer Ruben Jimenez. We were really excited to have Ruben on and he'll be back for sure so look for FEx to have more soundsystem sets in the future, like here.
Another quick, quick video above from mostly closing of the night footage after the lights came on. One of these days I'll get some quality, juicy glimpses going.
More photos from the rest of the night on the FEx fan page.

FEx December Recap
FEx in the Flesh from ItziNallah on Vimeo.
Had a fine time at FEx (Foreign Exchange) this month, with a surprisingly full crowd for my opening set. DJ Lady D laid down some beautiful global/house sounds before Searchl1te brought the bass. Lots of dancing as always and with plenty of DJ/Promoter community in the house. Newlife closed out with one of my favorite FEx sets to date, featuring some fantastic afrobeat heat as well as Jamaican & Indian-influenced vibes.
I had just enough footage to put together this video piece. Photos from the night are available here. Enjoy.
Muerte Midi: Dia de los Muertos
I'm hooking up with Dale Shine crew for this jam on the northwest side-all are welcome. Facebook event page here.
In Dale Shine's words, "DALE SHINE is a party
series dedicated to showcasing the music of Latin@ America and
integrating that music into the Chicago soundscape. The series aims for
inclusiveness and is committed to creating a safe space for marginalized
groups."
Pay your respects to those who came before you by dancing the night away to some dark disco, house, cumbia, ruidosón, and more. More info on DaleShine.com
VIDEO: DIY Community Block Party
Had a short set at the Rock the Block party today. Saw Dario X & Shazam Bangles do their thing and got some house music education by from the Excursions crew (JV & Cordell Johnson).
Vendors were lively & bands were rockin down at the other end of the block. I was lucky enough to catch Vivian Garcia's sultry flamenco fusions with Sonic Diaspora collaborator Domenichi Morris alongside on trumpet. What's really impressive was the crew from Q4 homemade the big stage. Plenty of friends, beautiful weather, good vibes.
Making a habit of taking video now when I can- enjoy.
